The short answer
To sell a .ai domain, list it where end users who build AI products are already searching, price it against .ai sold comps rather than a .com estimator, and close through escrow. Sedo handled the largest public .ai sale on record, Bot.ai at $1,200,000. Afternic reaches the most registrars, but its Fast Transfer network does not include .ai, so a .ai sale there is fulfilled by hand.

In front of a founder, not another investor. The best price for a .ai domain comes from an AI company that needs that exact name for a product launch, and that buyer searches marketplaces, registrar search results and the name itself. An investor on an auction floor pays wholesale, which aftermarket convention puts at roughly 40 to 60 percent of an end user price.
So the practical answer has two parts. First, make the name visibly for sale where a founder will land: a sales page on the domain, a listing on a marketplace with registrar distribution, and a price or a clear offer route. Second, price it on .ai comps. The extension has earned its premium. Anguilla's registry passed 500,000 registrations in 2024, and the government signed a five-year management deal with Identity Digital that October. More names means more supply, which is why a short, clear name still sells and a long coined one sits.

Porkbun at 7 percent, if the name is already there and your ask is $100,000 or less. The catch is reach: buyers see it on Porkbun, not across the registrar network.
Most reach
Afternic, as long as the name sits on its nameservers so you pay 15 percent, not 25. Budget for a manual transfer: .ai is not on the Fast Transfer list.

Can I sell a .ai domain on Afternic?
Yes, but not with Fast Transfer. Afternic's own page lists Fast Transfer for exactly ten extensions: .com, .co, .net, .org, .de, .biz, .pw, .io, .xyz and .info, with a Buy Now price under $100,000. A .ai name goes onto its standard network, where the buyer pays and then waits while you push the domain yourself.
That matters more than it sounds. Fast Transfer is what lets a buyer at a partner registrar check out and own the name in minutes, which is the whole reason Afternic's distribution converts impulse buyers. Without it, a .ai sale at Afternic behaves like a sale anywhere else: an agreed price, escrow or a checkout, and a transfer you have to complete promptly.

Is it worth selling .ai domains, or holding them?
It is worth selling any .ai name whose realistic price is not clearly above what it costs to keep. The .ai registry requires registrations and renewals in two-year blocks. Porkbun lists .ai at $82.70 a year in September 2026, so every renewal is about $165 per name, paid in advance.
Run that across a portfolio. Twenty-five .ai names at that rate cost roughly $2,070 a year to hold, and the bill arrives in lumps. One sale at $5,000 covers more than two years of the whole book. A portfolio that has not produced a sale in two renewal cycles is a subscription, not an investment.
