The short answer

A domain appraisal estimates what a name would sell for on the aftermarket, based on TLD strength, length, keyword demand and brandability, checked against real comparable sales. Automated appraisals are directional rather than exact: independent 2026 testing found the leading tools land within a factor of two of the eventual sale price on roughly 40% of sales. That is why the estimate here always arrives with its comps and a confidence score, so you can price against evidence instead of against a lonely number.

How our domain valuation works

Most appraisal tools hand you a number and ask you to trust it. Ours shows its work. Every domain valuation is built from four measurable signals, each scored on the meter you see in the result:

01

TLD strength

.com carries the deepest buyer pool, with .ai and .io commanding strong premiums in tech. The extension alone can swing a valuation by an order of magnitude.

02

Length

Four characters or fewer is rare inventory. Every extra character, hyphen or digit costs value; names past 15 characters trade at a steep discount.

03

Keyword demand

Names containing commercial keywords like pay, loan, capital, ai or travel inherit the demand of the industries that search for them.

04

Brandability

Pronounceable, memorable names with clean letter patterns score higher; awkward consonant clusters drag an otherwise short name down.

The estimate is then checked against comparable sales: real aftermarket transactions in the same keyword family, TLD and length band. You see those comps under every appraisal, so the number arrives with its evidence. When you're ready to act on a valuation, the premium domains for sale that match your search are one click away, and if you own the name, you can list it for sale at a price the data defends.

What a domain name value estimate can and cannot tell you

An appraisal is a starting point for a negotiation, not a promise. Two facts keep honest dealers honest:

  • §Domains are a thin market. The same name can fetch $2,000 from a reseller and $40,000 from the one startup that needs exactly that word.
  • §Comps are history, not prophecy. They anchor a realistic range; they don't guarantee the next sale lands inside it.

All appraisals on Domainsdealer are automated estimates for informational purposes only. They are not financial or investment advice, and not a guarantee of sale price or resale value. Read more in our FAQ and terms.
