Expired Domains
Expired domains are names whose owners let the registration lapse; after a grace period they drop back into the open market. Some carry real value: age, backlinks, type-in traffic. Most are junk. Here is how the cycle works and how a dealer separates the two.
The drop cycle, on one ledger line
Registration expires. The site usually goes dark; the owner can still renew at the normal price.
Grace period. Renewal still possible; many registrars park the name with ads in the meantime.
Redemption. The owner can claw the name back for a steep fee, typically $80-$200 on top of renewal.
Pending delete. Five days of countdown; no one can renew it now.
The name releases and drop-catching services race to re-register it in the first seconds. Contested names go straight to a private auction among the catchers' customers.
Exact windows vary by TLD and registrar; .com follows the pattern above most closely.
How to value a dropped domain before you chase it
The mistakes happen in the excitement of the countdown. Run the checks a desk runs:
- §Appraise the name itself. Forget the history for a second: would this name clear the bar as a fresh registration? Run it through the domain appraisal tool and read the comps.
- §Check the history. The Wayback Machine shows what lived there; spam, PBNs or a burned brand can make a name worth less than a fresh one.
- §Price the whole chase. Catching fees plus a contested drop auction routinely exceed what a similar name costs on the curated aftermarket, without the mystery baggage.
Expired hunting vs. buying curated: the honest trade
Drop-hunting is a volume game for professionals with tooling and patience: many small bets, most worthless, a few gems. If you need one good name for one real project, the math usually favors a listed aftermarket name with a clean history and a comps-backed price, closed through escrow instead of a race at 2am. Investors playing the volume game should read domain flipping for beginners first; the risk section is the part that pays.
Skip the 2am drop race.
